Arcade Fire memenangi Album of The Year dengan The Suburb

Like many who watched the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, music mogul and advertising executive Steve Stoute was shocked that Justin Bieber didn't win the Grammy for Best New Artist and that Eminem lost the Grammy for Album of the Year to Arcade Fire.

According to EW, the Grammy snubs of Bieber and Eminem caused Steve Stoute, longtime producer of Nas, to take out a full page open letter in Sunday’s New York Times in which Stoute criticized the Grammys and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for being out of touch with current culture. Steve Stoute added that it was good enough for the Grammys to have Eminem and Justin Bieber perform at the event, which helped draw 26.7 million viewers, but Bieber and Eminem were not good enough to win awards that should’ve gone to them.

In an open letter to Neil Portnow, NARAS and the Grammy Awards, producer Steve Stoute stated that after 20 years in the music business, he now feels that the Grammy Awards have lost touch with contemporary popular culture. Stoute went on to say that the Grammys fail from two key levels in that there's too much focus to produce a popular show that conflicts with the voting system and that a disrespect exists to take into account cultural shifts as "viable and artistic."

Steve Stoute went on to voice his frustration by citing examples of what he feels are conflicts between the Grammys and culture. "Unfortunately," said Stoute, "the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case."

Stoute went on to cite the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008 when Kanye West's Graduation was beat for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters and this year when Justin Bieber lost the Grammy for Best New Artist as further examples of how the Grammy Awards are out of touch with contemporary culture.

However, Steve Stoute did reveal the real reason why he chose to write the open letter. "What truly inspired the writing of this letter," admitted Stoute, "was that this most recent show fed my suspicions. As the show was coming to a close and just prior to presenting the award for Album Of The Year, the band Arcade Fire performed “Month of May” — only to… surprise… win the category and, in a moment of sheer coincidence, happened to be prepared to perform “Ready to Start.”

Pada pandangan aku, benar bahawa Eminem dan JB jauh lebih popular dari Esperanza dan Arcade Fire dari pelbagai aspek; populariti, personaliti, kekayaan, kutipan penjualan album dan lain-lain. Namun apakah populariti bersamaan kualiti? Sudah tentu tidak bukan? 

Grammy berbeza dengan American Mucis Award dimana pemenang AMA ditentukan melalui pengundian awam. Manakala Grammy pula menentukan pemenang sesebuah anugerah itu berdasarkan:

1. Pengundian ditentukan oleh 12,000 ahli dimana mereka semua terlibat dalam pembikinan rekod musik.
2. Pusingan pertama pengundian menentukan percalonan, dan
3. Pusingan kedua pengundian menentukan pemenang anugerah setiap kategori
4. Keputusan diaudit oleh firma bebas.

Melalui ciri-ciri diatas amalah sukar ianya dijalankan secara bias. Bagi aku Arcade Fire dan Esperanza Spalding layak menerima anugerah masing-masing!
